Masters Program    M.phil Program    Ph.D Program

Masters Program:

 

          A Master's degree will be awarded for passing a minimum of 60 Credits. A course of one credit shall mean one hour of lecture or three hours of Laboratory work per week.

  • The minimum pass marks of each course shall be 50%. Candidate obtaining less than 50% marks in any course shall be deemed to have failed in that course. Less than 50% marks secured by the student in any course shall not be counted towards the aggregate marks.
  • If a student fails to appear in the terminal examination in a course(s) on medical or any other reason, he/she shall be treated as absent and failed.
  • At the end of each semester a student shall be required to pass at least 12 credits for less than 12 credits shall required to pass all the registered credits, if he/she has availed one chance as concession, failing which he/she has cease to be a student of the University.
  • A student repeat the compulsory course(s) in which he/she has failed, as soon as the course(s) are offered next.
  • No student shall be allowed to continue studies beyond SIX semesters under any circumstances.
  • The controller of examinations shall issue a certificate of Merit to a student who stands first in the subject on the basis of over all result, provided that the student has obtained 80% marks or more in the aggregate, has not failed in, or repeated any course and has completed the course work in four semesters. The recipient for the award of Certificate of Merit shall also be awarded the Chancellor's Medal.
  • M.Sc. Project/Thesis/Seminar/Research Report and Master Easy which is of 6 credits or more shall be evaluated by an external examiner, the internal Examiner/Supervisor and the chairman of the department concerned. The external examiner will be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor from the approved panel of examiners, on the recommendation of the Chairman.

M.Phil Program:

         The requirements for the M.Phil. degree shall normally be completed within four consecutive semesters.

  • The requirements for the M.Phil. degree shall comprise Course work and Dissertation.
  • The course credit shall normally be completed within the first two semesters. The course requirements for each department shall be 24 credits.
  • Dissertation of 26 credits based on research shall normally be completed by the end of the fourth semester.
  • The minimum pass marks for each course shall be 50%. Candidate securing 80% marks or shall be placed in Grade ‘A’, those securing 65% or more but less than 80% marks in Grade ‘B’ and those securing 50% or more but less than 65% marks in grade ‘C’.
  • A JRL shall be evaluated in each course on the basis of periodical Test(s)/Assignment(s) during the semester and Terminal Examination at the end of the semester. Each course shall carry 100 marks of which 50% shall be reserved for class test(s)/Assignment(s) and 50% for the terminal examination.
  • There shall be a written examination for each course at the end of each semester on the dates fixed by the Controller of Examination in consultation with the Chairman/Dean.
  • A JRL shall be allowed to appear in the examination provided that he has been on the roll of the University during that semester, has registered himself for the courses of study and has attended at least 80% of the lectures/laboratory work and completed the course work to the satisfaction of the teacher and the chairman of the department concerned.
  • A JRL who has completed the following requirements shall be eligible for admission to M.Phil final examination: -
  • That has been a JRL on a regular basis in the teaching Department of the University for prescribed period.
  • That he has successfully completed the prescribed courses guided reading and class assignments, including seminars, colloquia and tutorial to the satisfaction of the teacher and the chairman of the department concerned.
  • That he has completed a dissertation on research topic approved by the Advanced Studies and Research Board.
  • A JRL who has completed the requirements stated above, shall submit an application in a prescribed form of the Controller of Examination for admission to the final Examination for M.Phil.
  • The Supervisor shall inform the Controller of Examination through the chairman of the department concerned about the date on which the viva-voice examination is to be held. The vice-chancellor shall on the advice of the Supervisor/Chairman, appoint an External Examiner from the panel of Examiners approved by the Advanced Studies and Research Board.
  • The examination shall be held on the University campus on such dates as may be notified by the Controller of Examinations in consultation with the Supervisor/Chairman of the department concerned.
  • The viva-voice Examination in defense of the dissertation shall be conducted by the committee consisting of the chairman of the department concerned, Supervisor of the JRL and the External Examiner.

 


Ph.D Program:

          The minimum period for completion of Ph.D. program shall be three years whereas the maximum period shall be six years.

  • The period for completion of Ph.D. program shall be counted from the date of registration.
  • A Ph.D. student may be required to complete course work of upto 24 credit hours if he does not hold a M.Phil. or equivalent degree.
  • A Ph.D. student shall be required to pass a comprehensive examination (written as well as oral) before the submission of his thesis. If the student does not pass the comprehensive examination in first attempt he may given one more chance on the recommendation of his Supervisor.
  • The registration of Ph.D. Student shall be deemed as cancelled if he does not pass the comprehensive examination even in the second attempt.
  • After passing the comprehensive examination but before the submission of his thesis, a Ph.D. student will give one seminar on topic relevant to his field of research.

         The thesis submitted by the candidate for Ph.D. degree must comply with the following conditions:

  • It must form a distinct contribution to knowledge and afford evidence of originality, shown either by the discovery of new facts or by the exercise of independent critical judgment.
  • It must not include research work for which a degree has been conferred on him in this or any other University.
  • It must be written in English and the presentation must be satisfactory for publication.
  • Any part of the thesis which has been published before submission of the thesis may be appended at the end of the thesis
